About Us

Our strengths

A recent Departmental Review Report highlights our departmental strengths and why students enjoy studying Philosophy at Stirling:

"Students strongly commended the Department for the excellence of its teaching, for the promptness of its response to feedback, for availability of staff and for the concern shown to students...Staff were felt to be particularly approachable and helpful."

"The panel was impressed by what was clearly a well organised, managed, and effective Department, with a vibrant research culture and an excellent set of programmes that were clearly appreciated by students."

In the 2008 Research Assessment Excercise, 70% of the department's research activity was judged to be either 'world leading' or 'internationally excellent'. This places the Stirling Department firmly within the top ten UK philosophy departments. Our standing in research is also demonstrated by the numerous and prestigious research awards gained by our staff members.

Our teaching

The Department offers both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. Our undergraduate programme includes modules on various topics that are not widely offered in other British Philosophy Departments. These include: the philosophies of Heidegger and Marx, and modules on legal philosophy and environmental philosophy. Our students are able do a wide range of Combined Honours programmes, including a new one in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) - the first of its kind to be introduced in Scotland.

Our staff members teach also on the joint Stirling/St. Andrews MLitt.

Our location

The Department is housed in Pathfoot Building that is located at the University’s campus in Stirling. The campus is set in the 18th century landscaped gardens of Airthrey Castle and widely thought to be one of the most beautiful campuses in Britain. Campus facilities include: the University Library, MacRobert Arts Centre, Robbins Students' Centre, and a shopping area with a bank, bookshop and a travel agent. The Campus also houses the Gannochy Sports Centre that offers a range of facilities for indoor sports, including an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

The town of Stirling lies just south of the Scottish Highlands. It is within easy reach, by road and train, of the cosmopolitan centers of Edinburgh and Glasgow. Being at the heart of Scotland, the Department enjoys close links with the other Scottish philosophy departments, all but one of which (Aberdeen) are within a fifty-mile radius. We collaborate with other Departments when organizing Visiting Speaker Seminars and with the Scots Philosophical Club (founded in 1900) whose bi-annual meetings rotate between different Philosophy Departments in Scotland.

Stirling is also historically significant and associated with momentous events in Scottish history. Two of the most famous battles of the Wars of Independence were fought here: the battle of Stirling Bridge (in 1297) when the English were defeated by the Scots under William Wallace, and Robert the Bruce's decisive victory at Bannockburn in 1314.
