AIMS
The purpose of this conference is to explore the connections between democracy and rights. Possible oppositions are well-known, but this conference will focus primarily on the continuities between democracy and rights; that is, whether rights are necessary for democracy (and if so which rights) or whether democracy is necessary for rights. Topics for discussion include whether we should understand democracy as itself the object of a right, what other rights are required for democracy (e.g. freedom of speech, education, privacy, and material condition) and how these democratic rights ought to be understood.
The conference will bring together academics from a range of disciplines, with speakers including Corey Brettschneider (Politics, Brown), Fabienne Peter (Philosophy, Warwick), Stuart White (Politics, Oxford), and Dean Machin (Philosophy, Warwick).
DETAILSThe conference will run from early afternoon on Monday 12th until mid afternoon on Tuesday 13th, allowing for travel.
Stirling is within an hour by rail from either Edinburgh or Glasgow.
For details of registration, please see the attached form. One day registration is available (Monday - two session; Tuesday - three sessions and lunch). There is also an optional dinner on the Monday evening. A limited number of bursaries are available for graduate students.
