Your Degree Progress at a Glance

The BA degree structure operates across the University, allowing you to combine a wide range of subjects from semester one onwards. You can in many cases start a new subject in semester two, or use the Summer Academic Programme to catch up with your studies if you need to, or if you want to change the direction of your degree.

Although there aren't limitless possibilities, the degree structure is quite complex because it is so flexible. The following summary is therefore no more than an introductory outline. (For full details of degree programmes you should always consult the University Calendar . The various degree programmes involving Philosophy are detailed at Philosophy Degree Programmes .)

Here, then, are the essential points to learn about the way your degree programme develops in the first four semesters (years one and two) for full-time students:

At the end of semester one (Autumn)

66 credits (3 complete modules) Ideal
44 credits (2 complete modules) Probably OK
22 credits (1 complete module) Something is wrong*

At the end of semester two (Spring)

132 credits (6 modules) Ideal
110 credits (5 modules) Probably OK
88 credits (4 modules) or fewer Something is wrong*

*Remedy:

Consider using the University's Summer Academic Programme. You can take up to one and a half modules. Classes are intensively taught over a six week period from late June to early August. Or you could opt to take two half modules, one in each of semesters three and four.

At the end of semester three (Autumn)

198 credits (9 modules) Good progress
176 credits (8 modules) Good progress
154 credits (7 modules) or fewer Your studies are falling behind

Semester four (Spring)

From the beginning of semester four you will begin to specialize to meet the requirements of your chosen degree programme. You may choose to pursue an Honours programme, a 3 year BA in a named subject, or the 3-year General Degree. You will normally have to take 3 modules (66 credits) in semester four, including the core modules in your chosen subject(s).

At the end of semester four (Spring)

Decisions on admission to Honours are made at the end of this semester; the University and departments are looking for:

  • 242 credits (11 full modules) in total
  • Fulfilment of the Honours admission requirements for the intended honours programme

Full details of Honours admission requirements, and of the programmes from semester five onwards, are given in the University Calendar.

Late admission to Honours (end of semester 5)

If you did not qualify for admission to Honours at the end of semester four, you may apply to be reconsidered on the basis of your performance in semester five. Again, the admission requirements are set out in the University Calendar.
