Dissertation projects are devised by students in consultation with suitable members of staff. To undertake a dissertation project you need to submit a proposal that has been discussed with and ‘signed off’ by a member of staff. The proposal will then be approved by the Department and a supervisor assigned.
Before deciding to undertake a dissertation you should think seriously about whether this is the form of Directed Independent Study that best suits your talents and interests. We have summarized some of the things you should think about in an advice page, Which form of Directed Independent Study should you choose?
Proposals for PHI9YY dissertations must be submitted in the April/May prior to the academic year in which the project is undertaken. Proposals for PHI9ZZ dissertations must be submitted in the November prior to the Spring semester in which the project is undertaken. Exact submission dates and proposal forms are given below.
You must submit a Dissertation proposal, on a form available HERE, by May 4 at the latest.
If you are in a position to settle the topic of your proposed dissertation at the end of semester 6, you should submit a proposal as described above for PHI9YY.
However, it is understood that you may not yet have decided on a topic. In this case you may still register on line to take PHI9ZZ. Your registration will be regarded as provisional on your submitting a satisfactory dissertation proposal during the Autumn semester (semester 7).
Students who register in this way must submit a proposal, on the form available HERE, by November 21.
This will allow time for the proposal to be considered by the Department (and, should this prove necessary, a change of registration at the end of the Autumn semester).
