Appendix 1: The Library - making the most of it

The Library Catalogue

The key to finding books and periodicals in the library is the library catalogue. You can search the library catalogue using the computers in the library.  It can also be accessed online at http://libcat.stir.ac.uk.

Borrowing Books

Books in the Library are classified either as 'Long Loan', 'Popular Loan' or 'Short Loan'. Long loan books may be borrowed for 4 weeks at a time; popular load books may be borrowed for 1 week; short loan books may be borrowed for 24 hours.

Students are entitled to borrow 10 popular loan books plus 4 short loan books. There is no limit on the number of long loan books that can be borrowed.

Long and popular loan books may be renewed either in the library or online.

Placing Holds

It is possible to place a hold on a book if all the long and popular copies are already on loan. The first copy that becomes available will be held at Lending Services for you, and you will be notified by email.  You can place a hold online using the catalogue. If you place a hold on a Long loan book, the person who has the book will be notified that it must be returned within a week.

The Short Loan Collection

Short loan books are kept physically separate from the other books, on shelving opposite the library entrance. This collection is comprised of books and photocopies which lecturers expect to be in heavy demand. Such books may be booked online in advance for a specific time and date.

Study Space

The new library has a wide variety of study spaces, including group study rooms, individual study desks, open study areas and study desks with PCs. Group study rooms can be booked online from the library web pages.

Printing and Photocopying

There are 6 photocopier-printers in the library, two on each level. They are operated with the use of a Stirling usename and password. Student accounts are credited with £6 each academic year. Printing costs 4p per A4 sheet. Additional credit can be added to your account with the use of moneyloaders situated in the Library Atrium, near the Cottrell porter's desk and outside the Pathfoot Dining Room.

Appendix 2: Student Support

Stirling offers a range of support services for students, including counselling and well-being, plus support with financial difficulties. The University is committed to supporting all its students and to taking all reasonable steps to adjust practices, procedures and circumstances that adversely affect students with disabilities.  It seeks to foster an inclusive community and to prevent anyone from being marginalised or unable to realise their potential. To this end, it has in place a number of ways to ensure that students with disabilities are not disadvantaged.  Often, these meet students’ needs as a matter of course (for example, the standard provision of audio aids in lecture theatres or the advance posting of course material on Succeed).  However, while the University attempts to fulfil its duty to anticipate students’ needs, there are occasion when the right support and necessary changes can be arranged only if the University is aware of a student’s particular situation.   For this reason, students are encouraged to disclose any disability to the University.  This can be done either:

  • by contacting the University’s Disability or Dyslexia Adviser in the Student Support Services (located in 4Y4 Cottrell Building) who will arrange a confidential one-to-one meeting to discuss the issues and possible adjustments to University practices or arrangements.  If the student then decides that they would rather keep their circumstances private, the matter will go no further, except that a confidential note will be made that the matter was discussed.

  • if a student prefers, they may speak to any member of staff with whom they feel comfortable.  If the student then decides that formal disclosure is in their best interest, a confidential meeting with the Disability Adviser will be arranged to discuss the issues.  If, however, the student decides that they would rather keep their circumstances private, the matter will go no further except that a confidential note will be passed to the Disability Adviser that the matter was discussed.

Appendix 4: Careers Advice

The Career Development Centre endeavours to provide resources which will enable students to make informed career decisions, pursue their goals effectively and develop the kinds of skills which will allow them to manage their careers throughout their lives.
