Section G. Student Feedback

[Student Evaluation Forms] [Philosophy Student/Staff Consultative Committee] [Consultative Groups]

Opportunities exist for students to provide feedback to Philosophy concerning its teaching provision. The main formal methods of feedback are these:

Student Evaluation Forms

Student Evaluation Forms (questionnaires) are available to all students on each module every semester via the module's Succeed pages. The forms used conform to a format laid down by the University. It is important that you fill out these questionnaires, so that we can know what we are doing right (and wrong), and the things that we need to improve in the future. We would be grateful for your cooperation in this matter.

Student/Staff Consultative Committee

The Philosophy Student/Staff Consultative Committee (PSSCC) meets twice each semester–the second meeting may be cancelled if there are no agenda items. Meetings are timed to occur shortly before meetings of the Divisional Committee. The student membership of the Committee consists of two undergraduate students from each year (elected by fellow students), one postgraduate student (elected by fellow students), and a representative from the student philosophy society. Representatives should include a representative for part-time students and, where appropriate, a representative for issues concerning accessibility. All members of staff are formally members of the committee. The Committee elects its own Chair and Secretary. Two students are elected by the Committee to be observers on the Divisional Committee. An agenda is circulated before each meeting of the PSSCC. Members are invited to submit agenda items in advance of the meeting and to produce papers for the meeting. Minutes of the meeting are posted on the Divisionall Noticeboard. A member of the PSSCC will give a report to the meeting of the Divisional Committee. The Committee discusses general issues concerning the organization and running of the Division, for example: the structure and content of the curriculum; teaching methods; assessment; student reading parties and conferences; and staff-student social events. The Committee provides a forum in which the Division can consult students about its plans and proposals; and in which students can raise matters of concern with the Division. It is open to students to draw the Committee’s attention to any problems arising from particular modules.

Consultative Groups

For each of the large classes in semesters 1-3, there are Consultative Groups consisting of one representative from each seminar group. These meet with the Module Coordinator and those lecturing on the module twice in the semester to discuss any matters that the representatives have been asked to raise. Where necessary the Module Coordinator takes appropriate action and, in any case, reports to the Divisional Committee.
