Introducing Philosophy
Philosophy at Stirling prides itself on combining an innovative teaching programme with research at the highest level. We are further committed to providing a dynamic and supportive learning environment in which students can easily feel at home.
Research
The Department has an active research environment with weekly Visiting Speaker Seminars, various Conferences and Workshops, and ongoing Research Projects. The research expertise of our staff members includes:
- Legal, Moral, Political and Social Philosophy
- Epistemology and Philosophy of Mind
- Logic and History of Analytic Philosophy (in particular, Wittgenstein)
In the 2008 Research Assessment Excercise, 70% of our research activity was judged to be either 'world leading' or 'internationally excellent'. This places the Stirling Department firmly within the top ten UK philosophy departments. Click here for further details and a full league table.
Teaching
The Department has an excellent undergraduate teaching programme covering a wide variety of philosophical topics within a friendly and innovative learning environment.
Postgraduate teaching and supervision is offered within the St Andrews and Stirling Joint Graduate Programme (SASP).
The Department organises, in conjunction with the Student Philosophy Society, an annual Reading Weekend for all philosophy students providing an informal forum for philosophical discussion. In 2011 the Reading Weekend took place in Glen Clova.
News
Philip Ebert and Adrian Haddock have both been awarded AHRC Fellowships. Philip will spend the spring semester 2012 working on Fregean themes in the philosophy of mathematics; Adrian will spend the autumn investigating the prospects of historical and contemporary forms of transcendental idealism. Congratulations a second time to Ambrose Lee who has been offered a job as Postdoctoral Research Officer in the Centre of Criminology, Faculty of Law, University of Oxford, working within an AHRC-funded research project on preventive justice. (November 2011)
Philosophy at Stirling has registered an overall satisfaction rating of more than 95% for the fourth year running In the 2011 NSS. This is again the best result in Scotland and in the top 5 in the UK (September 2011)

Stirling Philosophy Department has come first for Student Satisfaction amongst UK Philosophy Departments in the 2010 National Student Survey. 100% of students studying philosophy at Stirling agreed with the statement 'Overall, I am satisfied with the quality of the course'. (The average figure for UK Philosophy Departments was 86%.) (October 2010)

Rowan Cruft and Leif Wenar (KCL) have been awarded an Early Career Research Grant by the AHRC (£90.000) for their project "Rights and the Direction of Duties" (August 2009)

Sonia Roca-Royes has been awarded with the prestigious José Manuel Blecua prize by the University of Barcelona Social Council for her article 'Peacocke's principle-based account of modality: "Flexibility of origins" Plus S4', which was published in the journal Erkenntnis. (January 2009)
