  • The philosophy department is hosting three major international conferences in July 2012:

          --the British Society of Philosophy of Science (BSPS) Annual Conference (5th-6th July)

          --the Joint Session of the Mind and Aristotelian Society (6th-8th July)

          --the British Society of Ethical Theory (BSET) Annual Conference (9th-11th July)

 

News

  • We are delighted to announce the following three AHRC Fellowships:
  • Adrian Haddock has been awarded an AHRC Fellowship.  He will spend the autumn semester 2012 writing on the relationship between objectivity and idealism. (December 2011)
  • Colin Johnston has also been awarded an AHRC Fellowship.  He will spend the autumn semester 2012 writing on Frege and Wittgenstein's conceptions of language. (December 2011)
  • Philip Ebert was awarded an AHRC Early Career Fellowship. He will be working on Frege and topics in the philosophy of mathematics in the Spring 2012. (November 2011)

 

  • Dr Steinvör Árnadóttir, Dr Colin Johnston and Dr Ben Saunders have been appointed lectureships in Philosophy and will be joining the department in September 2010.

 

  • Stirling Philosophy Department has come first for Student Satisfaction amongst UK Philosophy Departments in the 2009 National Student Survey. 98% of students studying philosophy at Stirling agreed with the statement 'Overall, I am satisfied with the quality of the course'. (October 2009)

 

  • Rowan Cruft and Leif Wenar (KCL) have been awarded an Early Career Research Grant by the AHRC (£90,000) for their project "Rights and the Direction of Duties". (August 2009)

 

  • Congratulations to Michael Wheeler who has been promoted to Professor Wheeler. (May 2009)

 

  • Rowan Cruft has been awarded with an AHRC Reseach Network Grant (£50,000) for his project "Institutionalising Values: Beyond Human Rights?". (April 2009)

 

    • The José Manuel Blecua prize will be awarded to Dr Sonia Roca-Royes by the University of Barcelona Social Council. Dr Roca-Royes' article, 'Peacocke's principle-based account of modality: "Flexibility of origins" Plus S4', which was published in the journal Erkenntnis, has been chosen by the committee as the best article published in a recognized journal in the field of Humanities and Social Sciences. (January 2009)

 

  • The Stirling Department's "quality profile" in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise is: 4* 25%; 3* 45%; 2* 30%; 1* 0%; Unclassifed 0%. 4* is defined as "world-leading", 3* as "internationally excellent", and 2* as "recognised internationally". This result places the Stirling Department firmly within the top ten UK Philosophy departments. Go here for the full UK RAE philosophy league table. (December 2008)

 

  • Dr Jonathan Way has been appointed a lectureship in Philosophy and will be joining the department in February 2009. (November 2008)

 

  • Kent Hurtig has been appointed as a Visiting Research Fellow at Uppsala University in Sweden and will be away from the University until January 2012. (October 2008)
