Honours Programmes

Honours Degree study in Philosophy

Honours Programmes

These are programmes in which Philosophy is pursued over four years to Honours level. In the Single Honours programme only Philosophy is pursued in third and fourth year. There are programmes in which Philosophy and one other subject can be pursued to Honours level. In these programmes only Philosophy and the other subject are studied from semester four onwards. In addition there are two programmes in which Philosophy is combined with two other subjects to Honours level. These are:

  • Politics, Philosophy and Economics
  • Philosophy, Computing Science and Psychology

Semesters 1-3

In each of semesters 1 to 3 there is one Philosophy module available, usually taken along with modules in two other subjects. These Philosophy modules are designed both for those specialising in Philosophy and for those taking philosophy only for a few semesters.

Semester 4

All students pursuing an Honours programme take either PHI9C4 Logic or PHI9J4 Moral Theory. Single Honours students must take at least one other Philosophy module. Those pursuing programmes combining Philosophy with another subject to Honours level take modules only in the Honours subjects at this stage. The detailed requirements for Combined Honours students vary with the programme.

Semester 5-8

All honours students must take either PHI9CA Rationalism and Empiricism or PHI9CB Philosophy of Mind in semester 5. Their fourth year programme must contain an element of Directed Independent Study. This takes the form of a Dissertation project or an Elective.

A range of option modules is available from semester 4 onwards covering topics in contemporary philosophy and selected historical figures.
