University study should provide both an intellectual challenge and enjoyment. It should be valuable in itself, as well as providing the opportunity to develop skills that students will need when they leave the university. The Philosophy Department offers programmes designed to meet all of these various needs.
To earn a degree at Stirling, students must to gain credits in a range of modules. Most modules are taught and assessed during the course of one semester (there are two semesters per academic year). Students typically take three modules per semester.
Philosophy modules are taught by a combination of lectures and seminars. Lectures explore issues raised in the course reading materials, raise questions, and work through arguments. In most lectures there is an opportunity to ask questions. Discussion and argument are central to philosophy, and seminars (along with essay writing) are crucial for the development of philosophical understanding. They provide an opportunity to clarify one’s thoughts and to discuss issues covered in the course reading materials and lectures. Students on all modules (including those on philosophy) have opportunities to discuss their work individually with tutors and lecturers.
