Philosophy modules in the First Three Semesters


Semester 1: Philosophy - What is it all about?

A general introduction to the subject, focusing on such central topics as: reason and argument, scepticism and knowledge, free will and determinism, moral relativism. The aim of the module is to introduce some of the distinctive characteristics of philosophy, and to impart basic skills of reasoning, analysis and argument.

 

Semester 2: Mind, Value and Reality

This module brings together topics from the philosophy of religion, philosophy of mind, and moral philosophy, and investigates the links between them.

 

Semester 3: From Plato to Existentialism

A philosophical examination of several challenging and influential theoretical discussions of the relation between the individual and society, looking at works by Plato, Hobbes, Mill, Freud and Sartre.
